Getting the most from your hooks with the Gardner Point Doctor

Many things go into hooking a fish and getting it in the net. While it may be debated if the rod or the reel is more important, there is no denying that the point of the hook is where first contact is made with the fish. To make sure that this connection is one that will result in a fish on the bank, keeping the hook point in top shape is of paramount importance. Here is how.

The Gardner Point Doctor is a soft compound embedded with abrasive that makes getting a sharp point on you hook simple without the worry of removing too much of your hook.

A dull point. You can see the tip as been rolled over and is no longer straight.

Gardner "The Eye"
If your eyes are good enough you can see this if you look hard; if not, use a magnifier, such as a Gardner “The Eye” to examine the point. Keep in mind that a point like this will catch on your finger and can feel “sharp” while not getting a good hold of the fish.

If the point of the hook it really bent use a coin to push it back into shape. Once you have done that simply rub the hook on the Point Doctor pushing the hook “up” from the barb to the point on all sides of the point until it will catch when dragged across your thumb nail.

The finished point.
The restored point that you can use with confidence knowing it will catch fish.

And that’s all it takes to keep your hooks fishing even after they have taken a beating. In addition to catching more fish, this also keeps you from having to retie rigs over and over which can save you valuable fishing time and headache.
