How do amino acids work?

THE PROBLEM

Carp are stimulated to feed when between 50% and 85% of their chemoreceptors are occupied by amino acids. This ‘Just Right’ receptor coverage is established by generating a precise (~1.2 mg/min) amino acid level around an angler’s bait – this is incredibly difficult to achieve when fishing.

Amino Acids

THE SOLUTION

Impulse locks in an optimal ‘Just Right’ amino acid coverage by combining specific stimulatory Amino Acids with a proprietary receptor site blocking agent (PBA). The stimulatory properties of such blends are determined by the ratio of these components, not their individual amounts – this significantly reduces the effects of overstimulation.

How to use Impulse?

APPLICATION

By following the preparation and feeding instructions for their baits of choice, anglers can easily create an optimal amount of Impulse within the fishing area, ultimately generating an enhanced feeding response from fish.

General Information
1. All Impulse products are PVA friendly.
2. DO NOT use Impulse products with any other amino acid products or hydros.
3. Use any baits prepared with Impulse within 24-48 hours.
4. Use impulse gel or paste with non-absorbent baits such as boilies, maize or tiger nuts.
5. 6. Use Impulse Liquid for absorbent baits such as pellets and groundbait. Always feed ‘little and often’ if possible – method feeder works very well. Regular recasts with a paste wrapped/PVA ‘sticked’ hook baits over a spodded area also work well.
7. If spodding or balling, include a proportionally reduced amount of Impulse in the initial feed. e.g. A ‘walnut’ of dosed pellets per spomb of undosed pellets.

SPECIFIC PREPARATIONS

By following the preparation and feeding instructions for their baits of choice, anglers can easily create an optimal amount of Impulse within the fishing area, ultimately generating an enhanced feeding response from fish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put impulse in my base mix?
Typically, ‘no’, although there are certain exceptions. Briefly, standard base mixes generate finished boilies with largely impervious skins – this significantly limits the leak rate of Impulse from the bait and renders them non- stimulatory. However, Impulse liquid may be added to porous base mixes or soluble boilie base mixes.

Can I use impulse with other amino acids or hydros?
No – Impulse cannot be used with any other amino acids or hydros. This also includes predigested proteins and fermented foods.

Can I store dosed baits for longer than 24-48 hours?
This largely depends on the nature of the dosed bait. Simply, the drier the finished product the longer it will last before spoiling. For example, if Impulse liquid is sprayed onto pellets, which are then allowed to dry, these baits will last longer than six months if stored in a cool dry place. However, micro pellets or groundbait soaked with a lake water/Impulse liquid mix should be used within 12 hours of preparation. Any dosed baits developing a sour smell should be discarded immediately. A good rule of thumb is to use Impulse dosed baits ASAP. Example, inject gel into PVA bags before casting out etc.

What is the best method for fishing with impulse?
Impulse is best fished with a ‘little and often’ approach. While this method is more suited to match fishing situations, it can also be applied to a Big Carp approach. Simply, ‘golf ball’ sized amounts of dosed feed should be introduced every 20 to 30 minutes to keep the swim topped up with the stimulant – this can be best achieved though adding small PVA bags of dosed pellets to the rig.

Can impulse be used to make hook baits?
It is not advised to make hook baits using impulse liquids for the same reasons detailed above for base mixes.

How long does Impulse last?
We advise a shelf life of 12 months for the liquid, six months for the gel and three months for the paste (potentially longer if the foil seal is not broken).

Is Impulse safe?
Yes – Impulse is made from a proprietary blend of food grade amino acids that can be found in any health food store.

What are the best methods for preparing common baits?
Less porous baits (boilies, maize, tiger nuts etc.) should be coated with Impulse gel or wrapped with Impulse paste, while more porous baits (groundbait, pellets) should be prepared with the Impulse liquid. See the preparation guide section for specific examples.

What is the difference between each flavour of products?
All Impulse products contain the same propriety blend of stimulatory amino acids. Responding to angler demand, products containing small amounts of subtle flavouring (Fish, Fruit and Sweet Cream), designed to complement anglers’ feed choices, have been added to the product range.

Why should I choose impulse over other additives or amino acids?
Impulse products contain a unique blend of amino acids proven to trigger feeding in cyprinoid and other species. Anglers can review scientific studies at www.biosourcebaits.com and www.aminotec.com.

What species of fish does Impulse target?
Impulse induces a feeding response in most popular species including Carp, Bream, Tench, F1s, Chub and Barbel.

Is Impulse PVA friendly?
Yes, all of our products are PVA friendly – even the undiluted Impulse liquid.

How does Impulse work?
Impulse activates an optimal fraction (~60%) of the fishes’ amino acid receptors. This generates an enhanced feeding response in the fish.

What’s your favourite way to fish with Impulse?
We like to spray 6mm pellets with either original or fish flavoured Impulse liquid at 30ml per kg. These pellets are used with small/medium PVA mesh bags which are threaded onto the hook link. Hook baits are either a maize stack or a boilie on a simple stripped coated braid hair rig. Rigs are consistently recast every 20-30 minutes.

What’s next for BioSource Baits?
We are always looking to develop new products. We are currently working on species-specific products for Carp (Cyprophil) and Catfish (Catatonic).

Where can I buy Impulse?
Impulse can be purchased directly through our website at www.biosourcebaits.com, as-well as through a limited number of other online retailers and tackle shops.

Don’t take our word for it!

Doctor’s note
amino acids dr mills “I’m Patrick Mills, co-Founder of BioSource Baits and Inventor of the Impulse fish feeding stimulant. I grew up in rural Dorset, fishing the Stour’s upper reaches as a youngster before embarking on my lifelong obsession with carp fishing as a teenager after reading Kevin Maddocks’ Carp Fever. This book’s section on amino acids really ‘lit a fire’ under this budding chemist, ultimately launching a lifelong obsession focused on continuing Kevin’s ground breaking work and, ultimately, ‘cracking the amino acid code’.

This dream became a reality after I moved to the USA in the mid-1990s to pursue a career in chemical research. I’m now a Professor of Chemistry at a small College situated in the Chicago suburbs, where my research group and I have been investigating amino acid fish feeding stimulants for more than 15 years. Developments over this time have allowed for some significant breakthroughs, particularly the development of a novel model of chemoreception in fish and, ultimately, the creation of Impulse – a ground breaking fish feeding stimulant that has been scientifically proven to better than double anglers’ catch rates.”

Quick start guide

The following Big Carp and Match applications of Impulse Liquid were proven effective by both The Angling Times and Carpology.

BIG CARP
1. Coat feed pellets with Original or Fish Impulse liquid
– use 30ml of Impulse liquid per kg of pellets.

2. Create a ‘lightly spodded’ area – no more than 6-8 spods of dosed
pellets. DO NOT introduce too much dosed pellet at the start.
Please Note: for a more densely spodded area, undosed pellet may
also be included to increase bait volume.

3. Fish small – medium PVA bags of pellets over the spodded area.
Recast regularly (every 20-30 mins), even if not catching.

MATCH
1. Prepare a bait soak by adding 50ml (5 x 10ml doses) of Fish or
Original Liquid Impulse to 500ml of lake water.

2. Use the bait soak to prepare a tub of 2mm micros – just cover the
micro, then drain after two minutes.

3. Fish the finished micros ‘little and often’ through either a method
feeder or via a small pole cup. Refeed regularly (every 15-20 mins),
even if not catching. DO NOT introduce too much dosed pellet at
the start!

Please Note: If larger volumes of bait are required, add as much
undosed pellet as needed
